Valencia is getting ready for its 38th historic marathon, Sunday december 2nd

22,000: this is the record-breaking number of bibs sold this year for the big gathering of runners. Registrations have already closed 2 months ago after easily reaching the threshold of 20,000! Last year had already seen an amazing number of 19,248 participants, setting a record, as it does year after year. Both the government and the organisers intent to monitor the growth of this event. In fact, this dramatic increase has been initiated by Juan Roig, businessman and sponsor, founder of the supermarket chain Mercadona and of the “Marina de Empresas”, when he took charge of the competition through the Trinidad Alfonso foundation, named after his late mother and established in 2012. Results measured up to his ambitions thanks to his discreet but efficient involvement. Indeed, for the city of Valencia, the marathon Fondación Trinidad Alfonso is not only a sporting event but also a hugely popular and international event of importance for the local tourism economy.

Aware of its assets, the whole city is involved in the organisation and the hosting of all the runners and their families, adding up to nearly 50,000 people! Of course, it is difficult to provide an accurate estimate of the direct spending generated and of the impact in terms of communication but these types of events are known to be an extremely powerful mean to truly project the image of a beautiful, dynamic, modern and welcoming city at the international level. Moreover, runners are pampered here. Along with his bib, the competitor received a bag containing some gifts, such as a strap entitling him and his family to discounts here and there.

As the New-York marathon, the most prestigious one in the world, generates an economic spin-off of nearly 300 million euros while the Paris’ one draws up to 50 million, the Valencia’s event could be estimated to be about 15 million. A nice jackpot  to be shared among shops and tourism operators.
