After its designation, Valencia prepares to be the world’s capital of designLaurence Lemoine
The private sector and the public authorities savor their victory of the bid for Valencia to host the , World Design Capital in 2022 the major get together in design. Valencia is the first Spanish city to organize this event, whose media and economic spin-offs will be important. After several years of defending its candidacy (most successfully may I add) the third largest city in Spain has now 2 years to prepare.
Difficult to know precisely the impact in terms of attendance and the purely economic benefits. The most optimistic count on 50 000 visitors generating nearly 30 million euros; the lowest figures speak of 10,000 visitors with a commercial impact of around 8 million euros. The truth is probably between the two, the future will tell.
We are not talking about an event that is held over a weekend or even a week, but a series of activities spread throughout the year 2022, touching lots of differant topics such as sport, health, industry or sustainable development … For the entire region of Valencia, it is an acknowledgment of its historic place in design both nationally and internationally .
The city of Valencia (like many others) seeks to host this type of event that allows media coverage and a valorization of its image: that is why the city hall, the Generalitat, Marina, Feria de Valencia and several ministries, grouped together in the València Capital Mundial del Diseño association, jointly supported this application. The WDC20022 will manage a budget of about 10 million euros that will be provided by public institutions up to 40% and the rest financed by the private sector. Each euro invested should generate another 3.2 according to the organizers.
