(English) Valencia embarks on medical tourism

“Visit Valencia”, the organization in charge of the promotion of the city, has created a programme which aims to place Valencia City as the destination of health and wellness excellency, in particular for seniors.  The third biggest city of Spain can indeed establish itself as an important player in this sector, thanks to its good network of health centres, of highly-qualified professionals, as well as a quality of life partly explained by its privileged location by on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea. .

Even if medical tourism is sometimes a taboo topic, it is still on the rise and is often a solution for patients because  it offers an alternative to the pure and simple renunciation to treatment when it is too expensive. To this day, the programme “Valencia Medical Destination” includes two hospitals, six specialized clinics and other services such as spa and wellness centres (available here).

Generally speaking, medical tourism cannot be improvised: first of all , you must discuss it with your general practitioner, in case of post-operative complications your general practitioner has to be able to advise you. Secondly, you have to compare the utilities and services that are offered as well as the prices of the treatment that you are looking for.

The seriousness and quality of the site must be your major concern, keeping in mind that special accreditations can be given according to the competences of such and such a centre. These accreditations are delivered by the “Joint Commission International”, acknowledged as the principal international organization of health and patients security certification. “Visit Valencia”, the municipal entity in charge of the international promotion of Valencia, thus wishes to boost the visibility of what the city has to offer as far as health and wellness are concerned, for patients who are looking for a treatment outside of their country, while promoting the touristic advantages that Valencia offers for short and long-term stays.
