Brexit : first, a transitional period

The British Embassy in Madrid has published a guide to clarify the situation of British residents here. Almost 80.000 British people live in the Region of Valencia and 3 million British tourists visit the area every year.

From February the 1st to December the 31st of this year, things will remain stable with a transitional period of eleven months, but it will change at the beginning of 2021.

You have to register as a resident in the Registration System and you have until June 2021. Those who have five years of continuous residence will be granted the status of a settled (or permanent) resident; those who have been less than five years will be granted the status of a pre-assigned (or semi-permanent) resident and may apply for the status of a resident when they reach the five years.

British who legally reside in Spain before December 31st of this year will have their rights of residence, work and access to social security protected by the Withdrawal Agreement signed between the United Kingdom and the EU.

If they do not yet have a residence certificate, they must register as residents at the relevant police station, now in Calle Gremis.

As far as the NIE n° is concerned it continues to be at calle Bailen 9. So basically for the moments things stay the same until the next chapter!!!
